Gap Year Australia
Why choose your Gap Year Adventure in Australia?
Australia has so much to offer with its beautiful scenery, stunning beaches and lively culture. Changing Worlds offers a variety of paid and voluntary placements, each of which will give you a true Aussie experience.
You can choose to earn a wage and gain experience in a prestigious hotel in the exciting tourist centre of Surfers Paradise in Queensland. Alternatively, you can volunteer to work in a zoo and get close to koalas, dingos and crocodiles! If you want the wide-open spaces of the true outback you can volunteer to be a jackaroo or jillaroo on a sheep or cattle station.

Where will my Gap Year Placement in Australia be?
All our placements are based in Queensland, ‘the sunshine state’, which is renowned for its excellent climate and its outdoor life.
You can chose to earn a wage and gain experience in a prestigious hotel in the exciting tourist centre of Surfer's Paradise. This beautiful city is situated on the coast one hour of Brisbane and boasts some of the most beautiful surfing beaches in the world.
If you like the idea of working with koalas, dingoes and crocodiles you can volunteer to work in one of the local zoos.
If you want the wide-open spaces of Australia's spectacular outback and to experience its way of life, you can volunteer to be a jackaroo or a jillaroo on a sheep or cattle station.
What will I do?
All hotel workers begin as housekeepers. You will be responsible for the preparation and cleaning of guest bedrooms. This is physically demanding and requires a positive work attitude.
You can expect to work shifts in the evening and at weekends and to have two days off a week. Standards at the hotels are very high – you must be punctual, adhere to a strict dress code and be courteous to guests. You may eventually move to other posts dependent on any previous experience and how well you deal with guests.
Outback volunteer placements provide a tough physical challenge for people who enjoy working outdoors for long hours.
Applicants must be self sufficient, motivated and willing to get their hands dirty. A clean UK driving licence is useful. Ability to ride a horse is a huge advantage. There is no machinery work available.
Voluntary placements at the zoos will be of particular interest to those wishing to work with animals. The zoos contain koalas, birds, dingoes and crocodiles! Duties include feeding and watering, animal care and general maintenance.
Changing Worlds support
Our Changing Worlds representative will meet you on arrival, organise transport to your placement, contact you and your hosts regularly to check all is well and keep us updated in the UK. If you have a work-related problem your first contact is the manager of the hotel or farm.
