Gap Year Nepal

Why choose your Gap Year Adventure in Nepal?

Changing Worlds can offer you the chance to teach in this most unspoilt and fascinating area of the world.

You will have an amazing time, living in the Khatmandu valley and experiencing the Nepalese way of life. Those who do the optional one-week trek get the chance to see the best of the stunning Nepalese scenery with its mountains, valleys and monasteries.

We offer voluntary teaching placements in and around Kathmandu. You'll need to be enthuastic and resourceful - and it helps if you don't mind making a fool of yourself on occasions! If you have musical and sporting talents you will be particularly popular. Tempted? Read on...

Where will my Gap Year Placement in Nepal be?

Nepal is home to the breathtaking Himalayan Mountains. The world's highest (and still growing) peaks are twice the height of the Alps and dominate this small country and its way of life. Most Nepalese live far from a road and must travel by foot or mule to carry on their daily business.

You should trek to see Nepal properly and most of our volunteers choose to do the optional one week trek arranged by us soon after arrival. You'll be rewarded by the dramatic scenery and your encounters with the hopitable Nepalese people.

Nepal has a rich culture and history and still has a king. Wherever you go in the country, you will see evidence of Hinduism and Buddhism. There are monasteries, shrines, prayer flags and temples everywhere.

There is also an astounding diversity of animal life, ranging from the Bengal tiger to rhinoceros and elephant.

The majority of Changing Worlds' placements are located in the Kathmandu valley and usually within an hour of central Kathmandu, Nepal's exotic capital. The valley contains several other towns, temples, treks, cloud forests, hot springs and views of the Himalayas.

What will I do on my Gap Year in Nepal?

Our priority is to place you in a school where you will be able to make a genuine contribution to school life. This does mean that, by Nepalese standards, the schools are relatively well resourced and managed, so do not expect to be placed at the poorest Nepalese schools.

In most of the schools you will have the option of teaching primary and secondary age children. The teaching medium in all the placements is English. Your ability to speak and write good English is therefore a huge asset. Much of your teaching time will be spent teaching English although past volunteers have taught a range of subjects including Art, English Literature and Geography.

You will also be involved with extra curricular activities ranging from training the school choir, basketball, athletics and informally teaching local street children.

You will be placed with at least one other Changing Worlds volunteer with whom you may wish to team up to do lessons.
